National law firm TLT has strengthened its tech, IP and data team, by appointing digital transformation and AI specialist Tom Sharpe as partner in its London office.

Sharpe has joined TLT from Osborne Clarke, where he specialised in advising clients on large scale technology related transactions, typically as part of a client’s digital transformation journey, from outsourcings to software licensing.

Sharpe also specialises in advising new entrants and established players in the AI market on the procurement, governance and management of AI and on compliance with AI-specific regulations.

Prior to Osborne Clarke, Tom Sharpe worked at Slaughter and May, where he advised on a number of substantial technology transactions. He also recently completed a secondment at Capgemini where he worked alongside the General Counsel and key stakeholders within the organisation to establish and implement global AI policies and procedures, as well as supporting in negotiations with major AI vendors.

At TLT, Sharpe will join the national tech, IP and data team, advising clients across the firm’s key sectors including digital, financial services, future energy, leisure, food and drink, government and public services, real estate and retail and consumer goods.

Juliet Mason, Partner in TLT’s Digital team commented: “Last week’s announcement of the government’s AI plans has added fuel to the AI debate. Businesses across sectors will be carefully reviewing plans to identify the commercial opportunities and challenges ahead.

“Tom is one of the few lawyers in the UK who has been fully embedded in the tech sector since he started practicing. Not only does he have a clear view of the landscape ahead, he also understands the pressures businesses are facing to navigate the pace of change when it comes to tech advancements. Tom will be a huge asset to our tech/AI expertise, supporting the strategic growth of our national team.”

Commenting on his appointment, Tom said: “It’s an exciting time to being joining TLT – the firm is on an exceptional growth trajectory, being one of the fastest growing UK firms, with an impressive roster of clients, great culture and quickly growing team in London.

“More generally, this is a great time to be a technology lawyer, with digital transformation accelerating and with emerging technologies such as AI presenting huge opportunities for clients across all sectors. I’m looking forward to working with the team at TLT to continue building the firm’s digital offering and being part of a firm that puts culture at the heart of its strategy.”
