Stellantis N.V. has officially unveiled STLA AutoDrive 1.0, the company’s first in-house-developed automated driving system, marking a major step forward in vehicle automation and driver convenience.

The system delivers Hands-Free and Eyes-Off (SAE Level 3) functionality, allowing drivers to shift their focus from the road at speeds of up to 60 km/h (37 mph), even in challenging weather conditions or nighttime settings.
STLA AutoDrive is a key component of Stellantis’ broader technology ecosystem, complementing STLA Brain and STLA Smart Cockpit to create a more intelligent, user-friendly driving experience. Designed for use in dense urban environments and stop-and-go traffic, the system enables drivers to engage in non-driving activities such as watching a movie, responding to emails, or simply relaxing while the vehicle takes control.

“Helping drivers make the best use of their time is a priority,” said Ned Curic, Stellantis Chief Engineering and Technology Officer.
“By handling routine driving tasks, STLA AutoDrive will enhance the driving experience, making time behind the wheel more efficient and enjoyable.”
STLA AutoDrive offers a range of autonomous driving functions, including:
- Hands-Free and Eyes-Off (Level 3) Mode – Operates up to 60 km/h (37 mph) in select traffic conditions.
- Level 2+ (Hands-Off, Eyes-On) Mode – Provides adaptive cruise control and lane centering functions for smoother highway driving.
- Level 2 (Hands-On) Mode – Maintains speed and lane positioning while requiring driver engagement.
The system seamlessly integrates real-time traffic monitoring and vehicle control through a suite of advanced sensors, ensuring smooth, human-like driving performance. STLA AutoDrive’s automated sensor-cleaning technology further enhances reliability in various environmental conditions, such as light rain or road spray.
Activating STLA AutoDrive is simple: drivers receive a notification when conditions are suitable, and they can enable the system with a dedicated button. Once engaged, STLA AutoDrive manages speed, steering, braking, and safe following distances, creating a stress-free and efficient driving experience.
At higher speeds, the system enhances driver comfort by providing Adaptive Cruise Control and lane-centering capabilities. Future enhancements through over-the-air updates are expected to expand its capabilities, including higher-speed hands-free and eyes-off operation up to 95 km/h (59 mph), and advanced off-road automation for select models.
STLA AutoDrive is built on a scalable architecture, ensuring compatibility across Stellantis-branded vehicles worldwide. It adheres to all applicable regulatory requirements, with drivers required to remain seated, belted, and ready to assume control when prompted. Additionally, it complies with regional laws regarding driver conduct, including mobile phone usage restrictions.
