Rightcharge calls for fleet collaboration to unlock EV tariff savings

Share

As the energy price cap rises to 27 pence per kWh today — an 8.7% increase from January — Rightcharge is urging the fleet industry to unite in unlocking the untapped savings potential of electric vehicle (EV) tariffs.

With off-peak EV tariff rates as low as 6-7 pence per kWh, fleet operators could slash home charging costs by up to 80% compared to standard tariffs. For a fleet of 1,000 home-charging EV van drivers, this could mean annual savings of up to £1.2 million — or £1,200 per driver.

Despite the clear financial incentive, uptake of EV tariffs among drivers remains low. Rightcharge highlights a key barrier: while businesses stand to benefit from reduced fleet costs, EV tariffs can increase non-EV household energy costs for drivers — leaving them disincentivised to switch.

Rightcharge, a platform for EV charging solutions, is now calling for an industry-wide collaboration to address this issue and explore win-win models for fleets and their drivers.

“We see a significant opportunity to help fleets reduce home charging costs and reward drivers for switching,” said Charlie Cook, CEO of Rightcharge.

“We also recognise that EV tariffs are complex and that the barriers to employees switching are high. Today, what benefits the business might not benefit the driver, but we believe there’s a real opportunity to change this. That’s why we’re inviting fleets and industry players to discuss the nuances and develop a solution together.”

Simon Ungless, Fleet Manager at AA Commercial Group, echoed the need for collaboration: “This is a great opportunity to tackle this challenge and reduce fleet-wide charging costs, benefiting both businesses and drivers.

“We look forward to collaborating with Rightcharge to bring this to market.”

Rightcharge is exploring how its fleet home reimbursement solution could play a role in solving this challenge, enabling businesses to reimburse drivers fairly while encouraging tariff switching.

With electric fleets playing an ever-growing role in the UK’s net-zero ambitions, Rightcharge’s call to action comes at a crucial time for cost-conscious, sustainability-minded businesses.
