Mercia FM launches EV subscription service

Mercia Fleet Management (Mercia FM), a division of Fleet Evolution, has launched a new electric vehicle (EV) subscription service. Aimed at providing corporate customers with cost-effective, short-to-medium term EV solutions, Subscribe Electric, is designed to help businesses embrace electric driving while meeting immediate vehicle needs without the high costs associated with conventional short-term EV rentals.

This new service offers EVs for hire over periods ranging from three to twelve months, providing a more affordable alternative to traditional daily rental companies. According to Mercia FM, the high cost of short-term EV hires—sometimes reaching £2,000 per month for models like the Tesla Model 3—has deterred many businesses from transitioning to electric vehicles. Through Subscribe Electric, companies can access the same Tesla model for less than half the price, significantly lowering the financial barriers to going electric.

Andrew Leech, head of Mercia Fleet Management and owner and founder of Fleet Evolution, highlighted the service’s potential to drive the corporate shift to electric power.

“We can make short-term EVs highly attractive from a cost point of view, helping businesses meet their corporate sustainability targets at the same time.

“Subscribe Electric cars come fully expensed, including all servicing, breakdown, tyres and insurance costs, and requiring only the addition of electricity as and when required.”

Leech points out that the service is especially suited for businesses undergoing seasonal expansions or fulfilling new short-term contracts. Instead of committing to long-term leasing or paying hefty rental fees, companies can utilise Subscribe Electric to manage fluctuating staffing and vehicle needs.

The service also aims to ease the transition to electric for employees who are hesitant about the change from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. ““We also feel that this service will be ideal for corporates who want to onboard existing employees to EVs as part of a general fleet policy, but find that drivers are reticent to make the switch from their conventional ICE models in one go,” Leech added.

“By taking a Subscribe Electric car for a three-month period, the driver can familiarise themselves with the electric driving experience, including charging, range management and other factors associated with running EVs.

“That may then persuade them that making the transition to full electric is not as daunting or intimidating as they might have imagined,” he said.
