Market Data Sponsored by Market Data Asset finance new business fell by 4% in November Published: 16th January 2025 Share The latest figures from the Finance & Leasing Association (FLA) show that total asset finance new business (primarily leasing and hire purchase) fell in November 2024 by 4% compared with the same month in 2023. In the eleven months to November 2024, new business was 3% higher than in the same period in 2023. The commercial vehicle finance sector reported new business up in November by 11% compared with the same month in 2023. The business new car finance and plant and machinery sectors reported falls in new business of 9% and 3% respectively, over the same period. Commenting on the figures, Geraldine Kilkelly, Director of Research and Chief Economist at the FLA, said: “The asset finance market reported a modest fall in new business in November as new lending to SMEs and larger companies fell by 4% and 5% respectively. Of the main asset sectors, only the commercial vehicle finance sector reported new business growth. “We expect FLA asset finance providers to report a record level of new business in 2024 as a whole of around £39.7 billion. The outlook for 2025 remains challenging. Despite the lower inflation and interest rate environment, uncertainty about demand and pressure on net margins have hit business confidence and investment intentions. Nevertheless, FLA’s latest industry outlook survey suggested that almost two-thirds of asset finance respondents expected some increase in new business over the next year.” Nov 2024% change on prev. year3 months to Nov 2024% change on prev. year12 months to Nov 2024% change on prev. yearTotal FLA asset finance (£m)3,144-410,108139,5963Total excluding high value (£m)3,027-29,689237,6882 Data extracts: By asset: Plant and machinery finance (£m)565-31,80137,499-4Commercial vehicle finance (£m)948112,9231210,8749IT equipment finance (£m)66-30261-61,216-3Business equipment finance (£m)135-21421-111,696-11Car finance (£m)1,077-93,421-713,3182Aircraft, ships and rolling stock finance (£m)279621318-6By channel: Direct finance (£m)1,393-34,482217,0651Broker-introduced finance (£m)682-12,17258,6194Sales finance (£m)953-23,036-112,0054By product: Finance leasing (£m)269-5807-103,246-8Operating leasing (£m)86302,545210,0599Lease/Hire purchase (£m)1,641-25,332220,6301Other finance (£m)257-191,03654,2887 Lisa Laverick Editor - Asset Finance Connect Sign up to our newsletter Featured Stories Market DataLondon and North East lead UK business growth in December Market DataUK economy grows by 0.1% in November Market DataUK inflation falls to 2.5% in December
