Toyota and Waymo to advance autonomous driving deployment

Toyota Motor Corporation and Waymo have announced a preliminary agreement to collaborate on the development and deployment of autonomous driving technologies. The strategic partnership aims to combine Toyota’s automotive expertise with Waymo’s autonomous driving technology to accelerate the rollout of safe, advanced driverless solutions — including future applications in personally owned vehicles (POVs).

Woven by Toyota, Toyota’s advanced mobility subsidiary, will play a pivotal role in the potential collaboration, contributing its capabilities in software development and mobility innovation. Together, the companies share a unified vision to improve road safety and expand mobility access across the globe.

The partnership envisions the creation of a next-generation autonomous vehicle platform, leveraging Waymo’s generalisable self-driving technology and Toyota’s vehicle development prowess. Beyond vehicle platforms, the collaboration will explore how to bring elements of Waymo’s technology into the realm of POVs, opening the door for consumers to experience advanced driver assistance and autonomous features in their own vehicles.

“Toyota is committed to realising a society with zero traffic accidents and becoming a mobility company that delivers mobility for all,” said Hiroki Nakajima, Member of the Board and Executive Vice President of Toyota Motor Corporation.

“We share a strong sense of purpose and a common vision with Waymo in advancing safety through automated driving technology, and we are confident this collaboration can help bring our solutions to more people around the world.”

Waymo, already a dominant force in autonomous ride-hailing with over 250,000 weekly trips across four US cities, has logged tens of millions of miles and demonstrated a strong safety record — including 81% fewer injury-causing crashes compared to human drivers. The company’s Waymo One service continues to scale, and this partnership with Toyota signals an expansion of its technology into consumer vehicles for the first time.

“Waymo’s mission is to be the world’s most trusted driver,” said Tekedra Mawakana, co-CEO at Waymo. “This requires global partners like Toyota that share our commitment to improving road safety and expanding accessible transportation.

“We look forward to exploring this strategic partnership, incorporating their vehicles into our ride-hailing fleet and bringing the magic of Waymo’s autonomous driving technology to Toyota customers.”

Toyota has long pursued its “zero-accident” goal through a three-pillar approach integrating people, vehicles, and traffic infrastructure. This is embodied in the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite of advanced driver assistance technologies, now widely deployed in vehicles globally. The company sees this new collaboration as a pathway to scale its safety technologies further and to explore a future where autonomy enhances not only convenience, but also peace of mind for all road users.
