DLL and SolarBuddy partner to give the gift of light

DLL, a global asset finance company, has announced a new partnership with SolarBuddy, an impact organisation dedicated to alleviating extreme energy poverty. The collaboration aims to deliver solar-powered lights to children and communities in off-grid and underserved regions across Latin America, Africa, and Asia Pacific—while engaging DLL employees in hands-on volunteering efforts that directly support this mission.

Founded in 2016, SolarBuddy has been at the forefront of tackling the silent crisis of energy poverty. With over 685 million people globally living without reliable access to electricity, the organisation designs and distributes safe, solar-powered lighting solutions to help improve educational outcomes, health, and long-term opportunities for children growing up in energy-deficient environments.

The partnership reflects DLL’s broader commitment to accelerating the global energy transition in a way that’s not just environmentally sustainable, but also socially equitable. By supporting SolarBuddy’s mission, DLL is advancing its goal of fostering positive change through meaningful, purpose-driven collaboration.

“At DLL, accelerating the energy transition is a core ambition,” said Adrian Leach, Global Head of Energy Transition at DLL.

“Partnering with SolarBuddy allows us to address the human side of the transition by helping communities most affected by energy poverty. It’s a powerful reminder that access to clean and renewable energy is not only about decarbonisation, but also about creating opportunity and dignity for the next generation.”

Simon Doble, Founder and Chair of SolarBuddy, welcomed the partnership: “It has always been my dream to engage with remarkable organisations like DLL, bringing people together to raise awareness about energy poverty.

“Through this partnership, we will distribute numerous solar lights to children worldwide who are striving to improve their educational outcomes under challenging conditions.”

As part of the initiative, DLL employees are participating in volunteering opportunities to assemble nearly 3,400 JuniorBuddy solar lights in 2025. Already in April, more than 1,000 lights have been built by DLL members through live and virtual team activities.

These lights will be distributed to students in energy-poor regions, giving them the ability to read and study after dark — a seemingly simple gift with life-changing implications.
