Auto Futurecast special episode: powering the future

Share

The special episode of the Auto Futurecast, hosted by Chris Kirby recorded during the Asset Finance Connect Summer Conference, brought together industry thought leaders to explore the transformational changes shaping the automotive and asset finance sectors.

This high-profile discussion focused on pivotal themes such as the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the industry.

Key highlights from the session included thought-provoking insights from leading experts:

Transitioning heavy goods vehicles to electric

Karima Haji, Managing Director at Scania Financial Services, dissected the challenges confronting the heavy goods vehicle (HGV) sector’s transition to EVs.

High upfront costs, inadequate charging infrastructure in the UK, and insufficient government support were identified as significant barriers. Haji emphasised that leading European markets, such as Denmark and Norway, have surged ahead due to proactive subsidy strategies.

Despite these challenges, there is promise:

  • Depot-to-depot operations: Predictable routes for HGVs are gradually paving the way for EV adoption.
  • Collaborative infrastructure: Industry partners are addressing bottlenecks, however, the challenge of scaling implementation across the nation remains.

Haji concluded by underscoring the critical need to scale grid capacity to support megawatt chargers crucial for large-scale deployment.

Driving operational efficiency with AI

Richard Huston, Managing Director and Co-Founder of VAMOS, showcased AI’s potential to optimise workflows and handle high-volume, repetitive tasks.

VAMOS’ flagship solution, Lucero, exemplifies how AI is augmenting human expertise by streamlining processes such as email management and contract workflows. Huston stressed that effective AI adoption lies not in replacement but in enhancing human-driven decision-making. To achieve success, organisations must first optimise their foundational processes before integrating AI capabilities.

Revolutionising customer engagement with synthetic salespeople

Tony Lynch, Founder of CarPass.ai, introduced a bold concept centred on synthetic salespeople.

This AI-powered innovation promises to deliver human-like interactions in the car-buying process, bridging the gap left by traditional chatbots. Lynch predicted a significant future shift as AI-first interfaces replace conventional websites, urging businesses to capitalise on this transformation to stay competitive.

Addressing policy volatility for plug-in hybrids

Dom Surlis, Specialist Consultant at Ayvens, addressed the evolving policy landscape impacting plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).

By highlighting the risks posed by unstable emissions calculations and fluctuating tax incentives, Surlis called for long-term, stable regulatory frameworks to ensure sustainable growth for PHEVs in fleet operations and retail.

Revitalising EV rentals and infrastructure

Tom McLennan, Director of Policy & Public Affairs at BVRLA, championed improved EV rental infrastructure through initiatives such as the “Bon Voyage Charge” campaign.

This effort focuses on enhancing charging facilities at high-demand locations like airports. McLennan also underscored the importance of educating first-time EV renters to mitigate range anxiety and boost familiarity with EV technology.

Shaping the future of asset finance

The Auto Futurecast special episode highlighted two distinct recurring themes essential for driving the future of the sector:

  1. Bridging the gaps in accessibility and infrastructure to accelerate widespread EV adoption.
  2. Strategically incorporating AI to enhance operational efficiencies while retaining a human-centric approach.

Professionals attending the Asset Finance Connect Summer Conference were urged to harness the opportunities discussed to remain competitive in an industry undergoing rapid transformation.
