Alpha Trains and VIAS Rail sign leasing deal for 14 FLIRT1 trains

Alpha Trains, one of Europe’s leading train leasing companies, has signed a significant leasing agreement with VIAS Rail GmbH for 14 five-car FLIRT1 electric multiple units (EMUs) from Stadler. The agreement supports operations on the upcoming Emscher Express Network (ENE), with service set to begin in December 2026.

The ENE contract was awarded by the regional transport authorities Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) and Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL). Both the transport contract and the leasing arrangement will run concurrently until December 2030.

To ensure a high-quality experience for passengers from day one, the FLIRT1 trains will undergo an extensive modernisation programme. This includes thorough interior refurbishment, new seat upholstery, updated interior fittings, and the replacement of outdated technical components, enhancing both comfort and reliability.

Once operational, the upgraded trains will serve the RE 3 (Rhine-Emscher Express) route from Düsseldorf through Duisburg, Oberhausen, Gelsenkirchen, and Dortmund to Hamm — a route already familiar to the trains. They will also be introduced on the RE 41 (Vest-Ruhr-Express) line, currently run by DB Regio, which connects Bochum, Recklinghausen, and Haltern am See. Both lines will benefit from the increased seating capacity and improved passenger amenities offered by the updated fleet.

Using the same train type across two major regional lines enables more efficient fleet management, contributing to a more sustainable and resource-conscious rail operation.
